There have been some superb catches reported from these areas. September is traditionally a great month for Venachar with large natural brownies being caught. Many spooned fish have been found to have gorged themselves on the Heather Fly.Eric Ross, from Liverpool had a cracking 4lb 6oz fish from Grahavie Bay, on a Claret Sedgehog using a midge tip line and Peter Bowles from Newcastle upon Tyne, had his limit by lunchtime and returned a further 8 fish. Better conditions over the past week helped catches improve and most drifts have fished well. Many anglers have done well using floating lines and size 12’s and 10’s traditionals. September is usually one of the best months of the season and with good condition’s we expect to see large catches of both natural and stocked brownies.Featuring amongst those doing well were the Gulls Nest AC, 3 boats, 8 fish for 9lbs 12oz - best rod Peter King with 5 fish for 6lbs 2oz. The best taking flies have been the Doobry, Kee Hee, Kate McLaren and the Wickham’s Fancy and the top drifts were Portnellan, Beetle Bay, Grass banks, Grahavie Bay and Lendrick Point.

The Scottish Youths International Squad was selected at loch Venachar last weekend. After two tough days enduring strong winds on the Sunday 16 young men were selected and they will now be practising hard to retain the International Championship that they won on the Lake last month. Next year’s final is in Ireland on Lough Conn famous for its wild brown trout. Loch Venachar, also just brown trout, has no doubt produced a very strong squad. The overall winner of the Scottish championships was Scott Miller (16) from Perth, second was Max McKinstrie (13) Kippen, third Chris McCaig (15). The rest of the Squad, subject to age verification is in no particular order: Evan Reid, Craig Ferguson, Fraser Thomson, Steven McVeen, Ross Callaghan, Callum McIver, Kristofer Bates, Martin MacCafferty, James Fairlie, Rory Crosbie, Alan Fulton, Darren Hennan and Grant Osler.

The water level has risen yet another foot this week and is now at the highest recorded August level. The occasional mayfly is still to be seen and there have been large hatches of the heather fly. With the feeder burns running high all week the burn mouth areas have provided good sport. The loch was stocked on Wednesday with another 2000 quality brown trout. The biggest fish caught last week was a superb 2lb 15oz brownie caught on a Straggle Dabbler in Boathouse Bay by 18 year old Jamie Walker from Irvine and was included in a catch of 3 fish in total for 6lbs 4oz. Included amongst the club catches were IBM Fishing Club, 8 boats, 32 fish for 34lbs 2oz - best bag Harry Milns 7 for 7lb and the Penicuik AC 4 boats 8 fish for 8lbs 9oz.The best flies have been the Claret Straggle Dabbler, Clan Chief, Kate McLaren, Heather Fly and the Dunkeld and the best areas have proved to be Boathouse bay, Road Shore, Submarine Island, Carsaig, Mid deeps and the Grass Bank. The Scottish Youth Championships are being held this weekend.

August 13th, 2007

The loch water level has risen 2’ 5” over the past few days due to heavy rain. With feeder burns still running high this will mean that the burn mouth areas such as the Blackwater, Lendrick and Milton will fish well over coming days. Another 2000 one and a quarter pound plus brownies will be stocked this coming Wednesday giving time for them to ‘settle’ in before the Scottish Youth Championship weekend later this month. The heaviest fish taken last week was a lovely 3lb 8oz brownie taken on a Silver Invicta by Michael Winters from Falkirk. The Ness Glen AC had 5 boats out returning with 13 fish weighing 14lbs 3oz. The top taking flies have been the Straggle Dabbler, Silver Invicta, mini lures, and the Clan Chief fished on either a DI 3 or fast glass lines. The best drifts have proved to be Grahavie bay, Otter Island, Lendrick point, the Roadshore and Scout Bay.

Dries and wets have both worked well this week but some of the best boats have used the ‘Leven pull’ method coupled with DI 5 lines and had great results. He caught his fish from 5 drifts including Road Shore, Lendrick Point, Grahavie Bay and Otter Island. His best flies were size 12s’ straggle dabblers.

The loch has fished extremely well over the past few days. Dries and wet fly’s just under the surface have produced the best sport. With higher water temperature the deep water drifts are now giving plenty of action. There have been large hatches of sedges and we are still seeing mayfly’s. On breezy days some anglers using dapping rods have had good fun raising fish but they have not landed many using this method.

The loch water level is now starting to drop, but usually at this point in the season the loch is a good half metre lower than at present. Drifts that come into their own when the loch drops are Milton Point, Lendrick Burn and Portnellan. Mayflies have not been seen now for almost a week but there have been large buzzer hatches. Water temperature is holding at 15c – 1mt depth and water clarity is still superb.

The biggest brownie of the season to date was caught this week. This was a cracking wild fish of 4lb 2oz boated by Jim Clelland who was fishing with Strathclyde Police. Jim hooked the fish on a size 12’s green tailed Kate McLaren fished at Blackwater burn mouth when the monster took. Also doing well were Strathclyde Police, 7 boats, 11 fish for 15lb 12oz – best rod Jim Clelland with 1 for 4lb 2oz and the Ellem Fishing Club, 7 boats, 18 fish for 18lb 6oz.
